Turning retirement savings into sustainable income

How we helped a lifelong saver shift from building wealth to creating a secure retirement income.

LUCAS’ STORY

Retirement is not only about reaching the top, it is about coming back down with confidence. Lucas’ story shows how planning turned decades of saving into a secure and fulfilling retirement. For anyone preparing for life after work, this story highlights how the right strategies protect income, reduce uncertainty and bring peace of mind.

Situation

Lucas had always been a planner, measured, thoughtful and quietly determined. A dedicated hiker in his spare time, he often compared retirement to climbing a mountain: it required preparation, the right tools and a lot of discipline.

For 35 years, he worked hard, lived modestly, and steadily contributed to his RRSPs, TFSAs and non-registered investments. With every raise and budget tweak, he felt closer to his summit. Along the way, he worked with Brian, a financial planner who helped him build a solid framework: a smart mix of accounts, tax efficiency and a portfolio designed to outpace inflation.

At age 65, Lucas stood proudly at the top. Debt-free, financially secure and ready to enjoy life.

But as he looked toward retirement, a new realization hit: the climb had been just one part of the journey. Coming down the mountain, turning decades of saving into lasting income, would be the real test. And Lucas wasn’t sure where to begin.

Process

Brian knew that decumulation required a different playbook, one most people don’t see coming. So, together, they mapped out a plan not just to protect Lucas’s savings, but to make the most of them over time.

They addressed critical questions: How much could Lucas withdraw safely each year? Which accounts should be used first to lower lifetime taxes? What if the market dropped early in retirement? What would healthcare look like at 85 or 90?

Brian introduced a new set of tools:

  • A sustainable withdrawal plan tailored to Lucas’s lifestyle and longevity
  • A strategy for reducing tax drag by layering withdrawals from RRIFs, TFSAs and non-registered accounts
  • Portfolio tweaks for growth with stability, to protect against inflation and downturns
  • Built-in buffers for long-term care costs and future generosity toward grandkids and causes

Lucas quickly saw that the descent wasn’t something to fear, not with the right guide.

Outcome

With a plan in place, Lucas didn’t just retire, he thrived.

He and his wife travelled more, spent intentionally and gave freely. He knew exactly where his income would come from each year and how long it would last. Market dips didn’t shake him. Unexpected expenses didn’t derail him.

Most importantly, Lucas slept well. Not because the journey was over, but because Brian helped him approach it with clarity and confidence.

He still loves to hike. But now, he’s just as proud of the journey back down, because it was done with purpose, compassion and a financial plan that worked in every season of life.

Working with Lucas reminded me that retirement is not the end of the journey. It is a new chapter where purpose and clarity matter just as much as the numbers. My role is to help Clients step into that season with confidence and calm.
